CANADA TO THE U.S. AND BACK in the blink of an eye.

What is NEXUS?

NEXUS is a joint program between Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States.

How can NEXUS get me through customs faster?

As a NEXUS member, have access to dedicated NEXUS lanes that allow you to bypass line-ups. At the airport you will be entitled to use an automated NEXUS self-serve kiosk where you present your iris to verify your identity and membership in the program. Upon verification, you bypass customs agents and proceed on your way unless randomly selected for secondary screening.

NEXUS services are available at eight Canadian international airports with U.S. Preclearance. At Edmonton International Airport, NEXUS passengers use a dedicated priority line for both Customs clearance and pre-board screening when travelling to the United States.

How do I apply?

You can complete the form online or download and print, or pick-up a hard copy.

To be approved for the program, an applicant must:

  • Satisfy the eligibility criteria
  • Be admissible in Canada and the United States
  • Pass risk assessment by both countries

Step 2     Registration

NEXUS eyeApplicants who pass the risk assessment process will be invited to an enrollment centre for a formal interview with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection and/or Canada Border Services Agency officer approximately six to eight weeks after your initial application.

If you are accepted into NEXUS, the officer will:

  1. Explain the terms and conditions of NEXUS
  2. Take a digital photograph of your irises to verify your identity each time you enter Canada or the U.S.
  3. Take a digital photograph of your face and issue your membership card
  4. Explain the Travellers Declaration Card process (for Canadians only)
  5. Show you how to use the self-serve kiosks

How long does the application process take?

Application forms

Completing your application form takes about 30 minutes online.

You must provide acceptable proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate, along with driver's license details to complete the online application. Having the above information available plus history of residence and family information will speed up the application process.

Interviews

Applicants should allow themselves 30 minutes for the entire interview process.

What is the cost?

A NEXUS membership costs $50 and is valid for five years.

How is this different from CANPASS?

CANPASS was designed for passengers flying into Canada only and allowing for quick entry with Canada Border Services. NEXUS is designed to expedite the border crossing for travellers both into the Canada and the United States.
