New facilities designed to serve you better
Expansion 2012 refers to five projects that together will transform EIA: an expanded terminal building, a new Central Tower, expanded aircraft parking space, a new power substation and an upgraded central utilities plant.
A terminal built to delight
The new addition to the terminal offers you more places to relax, more dining options and more places to shop.
- Bright with intuitive design and signage, it's easy to find your way around.
- Spacious passenger lounges and areas will make your time at EIA comfortable and enjoyable.
- Alder-wood ceiling finishes and the natural light pouring in from large windows create a warm ambience.
Central Tower – a wind-sculpted original
Whether touching down from a far-flung international destination or driving into the airport from the highway, Central Tower will evoke an unmistakable reflection of the Capital Region's landscape. The tower’s folded ribbon exterior was inspired by the windswept prairies that hallmark our region. NAV CANADA’s air traffic control will sit atop the structure, watching over EIA’s bustling airfield.
For EIA customers, the base of the tower will provide:
- Superb views of the airfield from a large lobby and observation deck.
- A pedway, with design inspired by Edmonton’s High Level Bridge, connects the terminal and mezzanine level.
- New retail, food and beverage, and gathering space.
- Warm, natural light flowing through large panoramic windows.
Apron expansion
More gates mean more space is needed to park aircraft – 32 Canadian football fields to be exact. The huge apron expansion is a boon for passenger aircraft and EIA’s important cargo business.
A greener flight path
EIA has embraced sustainability as a core value. Expansion 2012 is building the future airport with industry-leading sustainability practices, including registering for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified status for the terminal expansion and LEED Silver status for Central Tower.
